What Is Liquid Metal Forging PressUpdate:2025-04-28 Hits:23
A Liquid Metal Forging Press is a specialized machine used in liquid metal forging (also known as semi-solid forging or thixoforging), a manufacturing process that shapes metal in a partially molten, semi-solid state under high pressure. Liquid metal forging process comprising pouring liquid metal into a mold, applying high pressure by a punch to said liquid metal through a sealing member of thin plate interposed between the pressure-applying surface of said punch and the liquid metal, wherein during pressing the rim of said sealing member because of high pressure and high temperature deforms and closely fits the mold to seal the clearance between the punch and mold against entrance of said liquid metal, thereby preventing the formation of flash.

Key Features of a Liquid Metal Forging Press
● Semi-Solid Material Processing
The metal (typically aluminum, magnesium, or steel alloys) is heated to a temperature where it is 20–60% solid, giving it a thixotropic property (flows like a fluid when pressed but behaves like a solid otherwise).
This reduces porosity and improves mechanical properties compared to traditional casting.
● High-Pressure Forging
The semi-solid metal is injected or placed into a die and pressed under high hydraulic or mechanical pressure (typically 50–150 MPa).
The pressure ensures complete filling of the die and eliminates voids.
● Precision Die Design
The dies are made from high-strength tool steel to withstand extreme pressures and temperatures.
Produces near-net-shape parts, reducing machining needs.
● Controlled Cooling
After forging, the part cools under pressure, refining the microstructure for enhanced strength.

Applications of Liquid Metal Forging Press
● Automotive (engine mounts, transmission parts, wheel hubs)
● Aerospace (lightweight structural components)
● Electronics (heat sinks, enclosures)
● Military/Defense (high-strength armor components)
Comparison to Other Processes
Process
|
Temperature | Pressure | Strength | Porosity | Best For |
Liquid Metal Forging | Semi-solid (thixotropic) | High | Very High | Low | Complex, high-strength parts |
Die Casting | Fully Liquid | Medium | Medium | High | High-volume, thin walls |
Hot Forging | Fully Solid (Hot) | Very High | Highest | None | Simple, ultra-strong parts |
Cold Forging | Room Temp | Extreme | Highest | None | Fasteners, shafts |
Advantages Over Traditional Methods
● Higher Strength (better than casting, closer to forging)
● Lower Porosity (no gas entrapment like in die casting)
● Energy Efficient (lower temps than hot forging)
● Complex Geometries (can form intricate shapes)
● Material Savings (near-net-shape reduces waste)
